Printable Shopping List

Need a basic vegan shopping list...anyone?

I have made the decision to stop eating animal foods.  I have been living semi-veggiterian for about 8 months now, but I was wondering if I could get a good list of some vegan friendly, natural foods.  Want to include lots of whole grains and even oil free if possible.Everything is appreciated!  Thanks! You guys are awesome! Thank you all so much. I'm gonna leave the question open a couple of days to see if I can get anymore advice. I'm so excited! :)

  1. Lettuce, lettuce, lettuce, some carrots, more lettuce, maybe some celery, more lettuce, and don't forget the lettuce.
  2. Congrats on your decision! There's plenty of information online. Just google "vegan shopping list." Even better, buy a book to use as a reference. "Becoming Vegan" is a good one. You'll be a more informed eater if you do your own research and discover new foods to eat. Gary B is obviously an idiot.
  3. Tofu Firm and silken (See side for more information) Tomatoes Tortillas Vegan bread (Most authentic / old fashioned French/Italian bread is vegan..) (Avoid honey as an ingredient.) Vegan Margarine Vegetable Broth powder Vegetables: Potatoes, Mushrooms, broccoli, carrots, spinach, kale, etc… Edamame (soybeans) Vegemite or Marmite:It’s a food spread extracted from brewers yeast that has a very unique hard-to-describe flavor. Frequently used as a topping on bread or toast, it has a salty taste that is quite strong, so – “spread thinly”Also adds flavor to soups, and gravies" WhiteVinegar this is a complete list from veganwolf.com goodluck
  4. fresh fruits and veggies.
  5. I found this page really helpful. It PETA's list of accidently vegan foods.http://www.peta.org/accidentallyVegan/ good luck!
  6. whole grain, whole wheat, flax seed, and rye bread that is dairy free lots of fruits and veggies! keep it colorful and get plenty of dark leafy greens beans, nuts, legumes pb&j for a quick fix oatmeal dairy free cereals that are made from whole grains or oats dairy alternatives you will find oils in things such as nuts and avocados but they are healthy oils and fats. just eat in moderation
  7. Oil free? This is a very bad idea. Oil is important for your body to function. You need good fats for your brain, your digestion and your reproduction system. Deep frying in oil is bad, but in things like stir fry, BBQ, etc it's good. In fact the first thing on your shopping list should be cold pressed virgin olive oil. Sesame oil, almond oil and grapeseed oil are great too. Other good things: Fruits and veggies, of course. Forget iceberg lettuce - -there's virtually nothing there but water. Go for dark green (romain, mixed greens, spinach) Bell peppers, especially red and orange are great for you. Did you know a red bell pepper has 4 times as much vitamin C as an orange? Go for a varietly of colors, and buy more veggies then fruit. White is bad - forget white bread, white rice and white sugar - all of them have had the most nutritious parts removed, Buy Florida Crystals, raw sugar or agave syrup for sweeteners. DO NOT buy fake sugars - -those things are horrible for you. Buy wheat or whole grains, whole grain bread and tortillas, wheat or spinach pastas. Quinoa, aramenth, barley, wheatberries and other grains are great (complex carbs and protein) There are 400,000 varieties of rice - try something other then white. Earth balance is a great non dairy butter. Silk chocolate milk is amazing. Edamame is one of my fav snacks.
  8. I'm living off a cheapo/healthy vegan diet, so here's what I eat: breakfast: cereal and soy milk, or oatmeal and soy milk, with fresh fruit (berries are in season right now) lunch: cold spaghetti with sauce (soy sauce + chilli powder + sesame seeds + olive oil) with mixed greens and cooked asparagus (also in season) dinner: fried rice with mixed veggies and tofu (squeeze it dry and crumble, so that it replaces the egg texture in non-vegan fried rice) So for a shopping list, here are the basics: soy milk your favorite cereal your favorite and in-season veggies: asparagus, onions, broccoli, garlic, mushrooms, olives, etc your favorite fruits: bananas, apples, berries, peaches, etc rice/ potatoes / bread hummus nutritional yeast (it's suppose to imitate cheese, but wait a year before trying this out. You'll be dissapointed if you try to compare it with cheese, but you'll learn to love it. Tastes awesome on popcorn (mixed with salt/pepper/papricka/garlic powder) avocadoes! These are expensive, but spread them on toast for breakfast, make homemade guacamole, slice it with tomatoes and eat if as a sandwich (add some salt), put it in salads, etc. tomatoes: for sandwiches, canned tomatoes for sauces fake meat: it's always good hits the spot if you crave something hearty tofu: If you don't know how to cook it, you'll learn quickly. Throw out the water, fry it in some oil, and add a sauce. It's tasteles so it absorbs whatever sauce you put on it, and you can eat it right out of the package or heat it. However, most people prefer eating silken or soft tofu cold, and firm tofu hot. Let me make it more simple: Eat carbs with proteins and veggies for lunch and dinner. Make lunch and dinner taste better with seasonings and fat. Eat fruit as a dessert or snack. Eat vitamin enriched cereal for breakfast with soymilk. Eat nuts as a snack.
  9. I don't have a whole list, but a couple of yummy things and recipes that I made up. Tofu, cooked with tamari, orange juice, and some garlic Tempeh is always good Ingredients for Sushi =] Oreos, if you need some Vegan junk food (the cream is really just whipped sugar) Rice Rice noodles and lots of Veggies for stir fry. Add either tamari or chili oil for flavor. (Tamari is similar to soy sauce) Tofurkey lunch meat with soy cheese and whole grain bread Good luck on your new found Veganism =]
